The Beauty of Narcissus
Daffodils is a lyrical poem for William Wordsworth published in 1807. It is one of the most popular poems of William Wordsworth. The poem is considered as a classic of English poetry and is inspired by an occasion when the poet and his sister came across long belt of daffodils. Daffodils and the poet represent ecocriticism, the relation between nature and human beings.
Through the poem Wordsworth shows several elements of nature. He uses a lot of similes, such as "I wandered lonely as a cloud"(Wordsworth, 1807). The poet describes himself as a cloud to demonstrate his psychological state as he is distracted in his thoughts before seeing the golden daffodils.
Furthermore, he personifies the daffodils by saying that they are swaying dancers to present the beauty of their movement with the breeze. William visualizes a detailed image, "Beside the lake, beneath the trees"(Wordsworth, 1807) to draw a complete picture about the magnificence of the view for the reader to feel each detail and emotion. In addition, he describes the waves as dancers who dance with daffodils. The poet, throughout the poem, concentrates to visualize each and every element of nature, which increases the reader's enjoyment.
The last stanza in the poem focuses on the importance of nature and its role in our lives. It relieves the stress, depression and distracting thoughts. The poet says that he cannot help being joyful after seeing that view. He stares and stares but does not realize how the daffodils affect his psychological state. Whenever he is stressed or pensive, he remembers the image of the dancing daffodils, and his heart becomes filled with happiness and pleasure. The good relation with nature helps to connect with both spiritual and social worlds. For instance, those who spend most of their time in the city lack vital qualities as loyalty and mercy. On the other hand, people who live and work in the country side have noble and pure souls.
In conclusion, Daffodils is considered one of the important poems in classic English literature. William Wordsworth utilizes variable figures of speech especially simile, metaphor, personification and visual images to represent the vitality of nature, thus emphasising that nature has the ability to control human mood and to form his traits.
